Best Sheath for the Leatherman Signal

The Signal is the outdoors Leatherman: 19 tools including a ferro rod, an emergency whistle, a hammer face, and a diamond sharpener, at about 7.5 ounces and 4.5 inches closed. It is the multitool most likely to get wet, muddy, and dropped.

A tool built for the backcountry should not live in a fabric pouch that holds water and grit against it. Kydex does not absorb anything, rinses clean, and holds the Signal by its frame with an audible click. It also carries on a pack strap with the MOLLE clip, which is where a Signal spends most of its time.

Fitment

Molded to the Signal only. Every sheath here is formed on the actual tool, so if your model is a variant, check the dimensions or ask before ordering.

The sheath, reviewed

1. Kydex Sheath for the Leatherman Signal

Molded in kydex to the tool it is named for, handmade in the U.S.A. by military veterans, with adjustable retention and an audible click when the tool seats. Available in black, black carbon fiber, and coyote brown carbon fiber. Guaranteed for life.

How to carry it

On a belt

The sheath ships with the standard Clip & Carry belt clip, which is universal across all our multitool sheaths and carries the tool vertically on a normal belt.

On a duty or work belt

Swap the clip for the Tek-Lok belt clip, which fits belts up to 2.25 inches wide and attaches with the sheath's existing holes.

On a pack, vest or bag

The MOLLE clip replaces the belt clip using the same screws and mounts the sheath to MOLLE webbing on a bag or plate carrier.

Why kydex

Kydex is a thermoformed plastic that is molded directly on the tool, so the sheath holds it by shape rather than by squeezing it. It does not absorb water, oil, or sweat, does not stretch, does not fray at the belt loop, and lets the tool draw with one hand. A retention screw sets how firmly it holds. It is why every sheath here is guaranteed for life.

Sitting, driving and horizontal carry

The reason people stop carrying a multitool is not the sheath's retention, it is the sheath at 4 o'clock digging into a car seat. Two fixes. Move it: 10 or 11 o'clock on the support side keeps it off the seat and reachable by either hand. Turn it: a Tek-Lok mounted sideways makes the sheath horizontal, so the tool lies along the belt and disappears when you sit; the belt-clip version is slimmer for standing days. Set retention so the tool holds upside down and no tighter, and the sheath stays comfortable sitting and driving.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Wave sheath fit the Signal?

No. The Signal is longer and a different shape.

Does the sheath hold the Signal with the carabiner clip attached?

The sheath grips the tool frame. The carabiner sits outside the shell.

Is kydex waterproof?

Yes. It does not absorb water and dries instantly.

How do I carry it on a pack?

Swap the belt clip for the MOLLE clip.

The bottom line

If you carry the tool daily, the Kydex Sheath for the Leatherman Signal is the upgrade that keeps it on your belt, clicks it in, and outlasts the pouch it came with. Add the Tek-Lok for a duty belt or the MOLLE clip for a pack.
