Best EDC Fixed Blade Knives (and How to Carry One)

A fixed blade for everyday carry is a different proposition from a camp knife: it has to be small enough to sit on a belt under a shirt or in a pocket, come with a sheath that actually retains it, and be worth carrying over a folder. Most are not. This guide covers the one we stock that is, the folding alternative with a fixed-blade carry, and the sheath and clip options that make either work.

ROGAN RFK-PRO, $129.99

The compact version of ROGAN's field knife: slim and light enough for constant carry, now in stainless steel for wet and harsh use, with a black kydex sheath, a belt clip and a choice of handle wrap in the box. It is a SERE and deployment blade sized for a belt. RFK-PRO.

The folding alternative: Buck 110 in kydex

A Buck 110 in a molded kydex sheath carries like a fixed blade: on the belt, one-hand draw, click retention, no pocket. It gives you a 3.75-inch blade and a lock-back at fixed-blade speed, and it is legal in more places than a fixed blade.

Why fixed

No lock to fail, no pivot to gunk up, and a draw that is one motion from sheath to hand. For work, hunting and the outdoors it is simpler. For an office, a folder is.

How to carry

Vertical on the belt at 3 or 4 o'clock with the included clip, or horizontal at the small of the back or appendix (scout carry) with a Tek-Lok turned sideways. A Tek-Lok fits belts to 2.25 inches; a belt clip is slimmer; a MOLLE clip mounts to a pack.

The rules

Check your state and city; fixed-blade carry laws are stricter than folder laws in many places, and concealed fixed blades are restricted in some.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best EDC fixed blade?

The ROGAN RFK-PRO, for size, steel and the sheath it ships with.

Is a fixed blade better than a folder for EDC?

Simpler and faster; harder to conceal and more restricted legally.

What is scout carry?

Horizontal carry on the belt, usually at the back or front.

Can I carry a Buck 110 like a fixed blade?

In a kydex belt sheath, yes.

Is fixed-blade carry legal?

Varies by state and city. Check before you carry.

The bottom line

The RFK-PRO if you want a real fixed blade; a Buck 110 in kydex if you want the carry without the legal questions.
