Scout carry is a fixed-blade knife worn horizontally on the belt, usually at the small of the back or across the front, instead of hanging vertically off the hip. It keeps the knife out of the way when you sit, hides it under a shirt, and puts the handle where either hand can reach it. This guide covers how it works, how to set it up with a Tek-Lok, and the knives and sheaths we stock for it.
Why horizontal
A vertical sheath on the hip catches on chairs, car seats and pack belts, and a long knife pokes your leg. Horizontal, the knife lies along the belt and disappears. At the back it is concealed by a shirt; at the front, the handle is at your hand.
Positions
Small of back, handle toward the strong hand: the classic scout position, concealed, slower to reach seated. Front, cross-draw: faster, and visible under a tight shirt. Either side at 3 or 9 o'clock: a compromise.
The hardware
A kydex sheath with eyelets and a Tek-Lok mounted sideways. The Tek-Lok clamps to belts up to 2.25 inches, locks, and rotates to any angle. Our Tek-Lok fits standard eyelet spacing on Clip & Carry sheaths.
The knife
A fixed blade with a kydex sheath: the ROGAN RFK-PRO ships with one and a belt clip. A folder in a molded belt sheath, like a Buck 110, can be mounted horizontal the same way.
Draw
Support hand lifts the shirt, strong hand grabs the handle and pulls sideways along the belt. The sheath's retention has to be set so the knife does not slide out when you bend over; a molded kydex sheath with a click does that.
Legal
Horizontal carry at the back is concealed carry of a fixed blade in most places, and that is restricted in some states and cities. Know your local law.
