Dango D01 R-Spec and D03 Dapper Review: The Bolted-Leather Wallets | Clip & Carry

Dango D01 R-Spec and D03 Dapper Review: The Bolted-Leather Wallets

The D01 R-Spec and D03 Dapper are the two Dango wallets built the original way: a CNC-machined 6061 aluminum chassis, top-grain leather bolted on with mil-spec hardware, and a silicone or elastic band. The D01 is horizontal with a carbon fiber back; the D03 is a bifold with a rail system. This review covers both, what the bolted construction is like to live with, and which to buy.

Bolted construction

The leather is not stitched to the metal; it is bolted with mil-spec hardware, which means it cannot come loose and can be replaced. The aluminum takes the wear, the leather takes the patina. Ten years in, a D01 looks used and works like new.

D01 R-Spec

Horizontal, so it sits flat in a front pocket, with a carbon fiber back plate and a powder coat that borrows from automotive finishes. The silicone band holds cash and pins the stack. Twelve cards is more than most people carry, and the wallet is thin with six.

D03 Dapper

A bifold for people who want their cards in pockets. The rail system holds three pockets that hold 14 cards, the elastic band closes it, and it is the Dango you can take to a meeting.

D03 Lite

The stripped version: a one-piece aluminum chassis that weighs almost nothing, ten cards in two windowed rails, and lanyard points on all four corners. D03 Lite.

Which one

D01 if you carry a few cards and want the thinnest. D03 if you carry a lot and want pockets. Both take the Pocket Clip.
