Kodiak Leather's duffels are the bags people mean when they say leather duffel: top-grain buffalo, brass hardware, YKK zippers, and enough pockets to travel out of. The 45L Denali is the travel bag with a laptop and shoe compartment; the 60L Weekender is the big road-trip bag. This review covers both after real use: the leather, the pockets, the straps, and what to know before buying.

The leather
Buffalo top-grain is thick, textured and heavy, and it softens with every trip. New, it is stiff enough to stand; a year in, it slumps like a bag that has been places. Both duffels use it; the Weekender is the thicker, heavier bag.
The pockets
The Denali's laptop compartment is padded and on the outside, so it comes out at security without unpacking, and the shoe compartment keeps a pair away from your shirts. The Weekender trades those for buckle pockets and a side compartment. For flying, Denali; for driving, Weekender.
Straps and handles
Double-wrapped handles on the Denali and reinforced side handles on the Weekender, plus an adjustable shoulder strap on each. The Denali's luggage strap slides over a roller handle. Brass feet keep the bottom off the floor.
What to know
They are heavy empty, four to six pounds, because the leather is real. They are not waterproof; wipe them down. And they are big: the 60L is a lot of bag for a weekend.
Compared
For a lighter bag, the 25L Wasatch in waxed canvas. For work, the Sitka messenger.
