Best Truck Gun Holsters and Mounts

A truck has more places to stage a gun than a car and more reasons to: a long gun behind the seat, a pistol under the dash, a shotgun on the ranch. It also vibrates more, gets driven off pavement, and has a cab that people look into. This guide covers how to mount a pistol and a long gun in a truck without drilling through anything you care about, using the SofHold magnets we carry.

Pistol under the dash

Same as any vehicle: a SofHold magnetic mount screwed to the plastic under the dash, left of the column, where a hand off the wheel lands on the grip. Trucks have more room under there than cars, so you can angle the gun grip-down and muzzle toward the firewall. Use the screws; adhesive lets go on washboard roads and in a hot cab.

Long gun behind the seat or under the rear seat

Two magnets hold a rifle or shotgun flat. Screw one where the barrel will rest and one under the receiver, spaced for your gun, on the back wall of the cab behind the seat, or up under a folding rear bench. The 12 gauge and .223 versions are the same 50-pound magnet with the caliber embossed, if you want to label them. A long gun on magnets comes off with one hand and does not rattle.

Console and door

A magnet on the driver's side of the console is the second-fastest pistol position and the most visible one. A magnet inside the door pocket keeps a pistol out of sight and is reachable, but a door is the part of the truck that moves most, so screws only and check the hold after the first week.

Under the seat

Under the front of the driver's seat is concealed from every window. Check that the seat rails and any wiring do not contact the gun through the full travel of the seat before you mount there.

What not to do

Do not leave a gun on a magnet in a parked truck. Vehicle break-ins are the way most stolen guns get stolen, and a truck cab is glass on three sides. The magnet is for when you are in the truck; when you get out, the gun goes with you or into a locked box.

Frequently asked questions

Will a magnet hold a rifle in a truck?

Two 50-pound magnets, one under the barrel and one under the receiver, hold a rifle or shotgun through rough roads.

Will the magnet damage my truck's interior?

Two small screws in plastic trim, or an adhesive strip. Nothing a buyer will notice.

Does heat affect the magnet?

Neodymium loses a little pull above about 175°F and recovers when it cools. A closed cab in summer stays below that.

Will it hold a polymer-frame pistol?

Yes. The magnet holds the steel slide.

Is it legal to mount a gun in my truck?

Depends on your state. Some treat a gun within reach as carried on your person. Check before you mount.

The bottom line

One SofHold magnet under the dash for the pistol, two behind the seat for the long gun, all screwed down. Fast, cheap, and nothing to unbolt when you sell the truck.
