Best Holsters for the S&W Shield, Shield Plus and Shield M2.0 (and Shield .45, Shield X)

The Smith & Wesson Shield is the single-stack that sold concealed carry to a million people, and the Shield Plus and M2.0 kept the same slide while changing the grip and trigger. That matters for holsters: the 9mm and .40 Shields across all three generations share one mold, the Shield .45 needs its own, and the new Shield X, the double-stack, is a different gun. This guide sorts it out and covers the kydex holsters we stock for each.

Which Smith & Wesson M&P Shield models share a holster

The original Shield, Shield M2.0 and Shield Plus in 9mm and .40 share a slide and trigger guard, so the holster that fits one fits all three. The Shield .45 is wider and longer and has its own mold. The Shield X is a new double-stack frame and shares nothing.

The holsters, reviewed

Clip & Carry IWB Holster for the Shield / Shield Plus / Shield M2.0, 9mm and .40

Molded in .08-inch kydex with no excess material, so the gun seats with an audible click and stays put. The edges are folded rather than left square, the sweat shield runs the full length of the slide, and the belt clip cants 20 degrees either direction. Retention is set with screws, and the screw spacing accepts a claw. Handmade in the U.S.A. by a military veteran, right or left hand, black or carbon-fiber-pattern kydex, lifetime guarantee. $44.99.

Clip & Carry IWB Holster for the Shield .45

The same construction molded to the wider, longer .45 slide. $44.99.

Shield X IWB Holster

For the double-stack Shield X. Formed over a CNC-milled aluminum mold, with Posi-Click retention, cant adjustable from -5 to +20 degrees, an undercut trigger guard for a clean grip, an open muzzle for threaded barrels, and clearance for suppressor-height sights. 1.5-inch belt clip, right or left hand, made in the USA, lifetime warranty. $41.95.

Shield X Paddle Holster

The outside-the-waistband version on a paddle that slides over the belt without unthreading it. Same aluminum-mold fit and Posi-Click retention, cant adjustable -5 to +20 degrees, open muzzle, suppressor-sight clearance. Right or left hand, made in the USA, lifetime warranty. $46.95.

How to carry a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield

Appendix

The Shield's thin slide makes it a natural appendix gun. Neutral cant and a claw; the Plus's 13-round grip is taller than the original's and benefits from the claw more.

Strong side

Fifteen degrees forward at 3 or 4 o'clock. The Shield is so thin that the grip is the only thing to hide.

Optics and lights

The Clip & Carry molds clear standard sights and low-mount optics on the Shield Plus optics-ready slides. No light-bearing version; the Shield's rail is too short for most lights anyway.

Frequently asked questions

The bottom line
