Best Flashlight Brands: Fenix, Nitecore, Olight, Powertac and Streamlight | Clip & Carry

Best Flashlight Brands: Fenix, Nitecore, Olight, Powertac and Streamlight

There are five flashlight brands worth your money for everyday and duty use, and they are not interchangeable. Fenix builds the widest line and the toughest bodies. Nitecore chases output. Olight makes the cleverest small lights and the magnetic charging. Powertac builds value tactical lights. Streamlight is what police departments buy. This guide explains each brand's character, the light to start with, and who it is for.

Fenix

The most complete line: pocket lights (E35R, PD25R), tactical (PD36R, TK16, TK20R), headlamps (HM65R-T, HM71R, HP35R), lanterns (CL27R). Conservative interfaces, IP68 everything, USB-C across the range. Start with the E35R.

Nitecore

Output first. The EDC29 hits 6500 lumens and the EDC37 8000, in bodies that still fit a pocket, with dual-stage buttons and thermal sensing. Start with the EDC29.

Olight

Small, refined, and magnetic. The Baton line is the desk-to-pocket standard and the ArkPro flat light does more tricks than anything else. Proprietary charging pucks are the trade-off. Start with the ArkPro or Baton 4 Pro.

Powertac

Value tactical lights with good output per dollar: the E3R Nova at 820 lumens for $40, the M6 Tradesman with a magnetic tail, the E9 long-thrower. Start with the E3R Nova.

Streamlight

Duty lights and weapon lights: Stinger, ProTac, TLR. Fewer lumens on paper, more years on a belt. We carry Streamlight weapon lights and the Wedge; see the linked guide.

How to choose

One light for everything: Fenix. Maximum brightness: Nitecore. Smallest and cleverest: Olight. Budget tactical: Powertac. Duty issue: Streamlight.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best flashlight brand?

Fenix for the widest, most reliable line. Nitecore for output, Olight for small lights.

Is Olight better than Fenix?

Olight is more clever, Fenix is more conservative and standard. Both are good.

Is Nitecore reliable?

Yes, and the EDC series is well built. Their focus is output.

What brand do police use?

Streamlight and Fenix.

Are cheap Amazon flashlights any good?

Rarely. Lumens claims are unverified and batteries are the weak point.

The bottom line

Start with the Fenix E35R if you want one light. Then pick a brand by what you care about.
