Best Tactical Flashlights: Fenix TK Series Ranked

A tactical flashlight is not just a bright one. It is a light with a tail switch you can work by feel, momentary-on so it is only lit while you press, an instant strobe, a body that survives being dropped on concrete, and enough throw to identify what is at the far end of a lot. We stock the full Fenix TK line plus the pocket-sized PD36 TAC, and this guide ranks them by the job: duty, everyday tactical, maximum power, longest throw, and budget.

What makes a flashlight tactical

Four things, and lumens is the least important. A tail switch you can run with a thumb without looking, ideally with momentary so the light is on only while pressed. An instant strobe. A body rated for drops and water, usually IP68 and a meter or more. And candela, which is the number that predicts throw; two lights with the same lumens can differ by hundreds of feet depending on how tightly the beam is focused. Every light below has the switch and the build. They differ in throw, size, and battery.

The tactical flashlights, reviewed

1. Fenix TK20R V2.0: best overall

The best balance in the line. 3,000 lumens from a Luminus SFT70 focused to 56,600 candela, which is a 1,558-foot beam, dual rear switches, USB-C charging, a 5,000 mAh 21700 that runs 48 hours on Eco, IP68, and a 4.9-foot drop rating. It throws like the bigger lights and carries like a duty light. Start here.

2. Fenix TK21R: best duty light

Built for professionals: 3,600 lumens and a 480-meter beam from a Luminus SFT90, Fenix's APF pulse-frequency system for beam consistency, a dual tail switch with instant burst and instant strobe, and a hidden USB-C port that fast-charges in about 1.5 hours. If the light goes on a belt every shift, this is the one.

3. Fenix TK22R: best switch design

3,200 lumens with a seamless switch between tactical and duty modes through Fenix's Flexi-sensa control switch. Tungsten steel striking tips, double battery springs, APF, overheat protection, a 5,000 mAh cell, and an IP68 rating that holds even with the charging port exposed. The most refined interface in the family.

4. Fenix TK16 V2.0: best value full-size

3,100 lumens and 36,100 candela from a single USB-C rechargeable 21700, a dual tail switch with instant strobe, and a pulse-frequency transmission system for anti-interference, at under a hundred dollars. The TK20R V2.0 throws farther; the TK16 V2.0 costs less.

5. Fenix TK17: best battery

3,600 lumens, a 330-meter beam, dual switch with instant burst and strobe, A5051-T6 aluminum with tungsten steel striking tips, IP68 and a one-meter drop rating. The included ARB-L21-6000B is a 6,000 mAh USB-C cell that can also discharge to other devices, so the flashlight doubles as a power bank.

6. Fenix PD36 TAC: best pocket tactical

The tactical interface in a 5.5-inch pocket-clip body: 3,000 lumens, 898 feet, a tactical tail switch plus a mechanical toggle between two operating modes, a self-charging USB-C 21700, 160 hours on Eco, and A6061-T6 aluminum with double springs. The one to carry every day. Full review here.

7. Fenix TK05R: best compact and budget

1,000 lumens and a 450-meter beam from a pocket-sized light with a dual tail switch, instant strobe, USB-C charging, an included ARB-L18-1100 cell, 14.5 hours of runtime, IP68, and a one-meter drop rating, with APF for beam consistency. The cheapest way into a real tactical switch.

8. Fenix TK26R: best for hunting and law enforcement

1,500 lumens of white light plus 200 lumens of green and 150 of red, which is why officers, hunters, and fishermen pick it: green preserves night vision, red is discreet. Runs on an included 18650 charged in the light over USB-C, or two CR123 primaries. IP68 and built for temperature extremes.

9. Fenix TK35UE V2.0: best flat-body high output

5,000 lumens and over 1,300 feet of throw in a flat body that carries better than a tube, with a mechanical toggle between Tactical, Duty, and Lockout modes and an instant strobe. Runs on two 18650s, which are not included.

10. Fenix TK35R: most powerful

5,800 lumens in burst mode and a 610-meter, 2,001-foot beam from two 4,000 mAh cells that run 105 hours on Eco. It adds dual-level UV for document checks and inspections, selectable by a Flexisensa toggle, silent dual tail switches, a battery indicator, and a reinforced sliding USB-C cover. The most light in the line.

11. Fenix TK30R: longest throw

Not an LED. The TK30R uses a broad-spectrum white laser to reach 1,500 meters from just 500 lumens, because nearly all of that light is in a pencil beam. A rotary toggle tail cap for one-handed mode changes, instant strobe, a hidden USB-C port, and a 6,000 mAh 21700 with about nine hours of runtime. For a wider laser beam and longer high-mode runtime, the TK30 reaches 1,200 meters at over 360,000 candela.

How to choose

Throw or flood

Candela decides throw. For a yard or a corridor, 30,000 to 60,000 candela is plenty. For a field or a shoreline, the laser lights are in a different class.

Battery

21700 lights run longer and brighter; 18650 lights are slimmer. Lights with USB-C on the cell itself, like the PD36 TAC, charge anywhere. The TK35UE V2.0 does not include batteries.

Switches

Dual tail switches separate momentary from mode changes. Mechanical toggles let you lock a light into tactical or duty behavior so the tail switch always does the same thing.

Carry

A tactical light is useless in a bag. Belt carry in a molded kydex sheath keeps the tail switch exposed for momentary from the holster; see our flashlight sheath collection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tactical flashlight overall?

The Fenix TK20R V2.0. It has the throw of the larger lights, dual rear switches, USB-C, and a 5,000 mAh cell, in a duty-belt size.

How many lumens does a tactical flashlight need?

1,000 is enough for most defensive use. Above that, candela and beam distance matter more than lumens.

What is the longest-throwing tactical flashlight?

The Fenix TK30R, a white laser light with a 1,500-meter beam.

Which tactical flashlight fits in a pocket?

The Fenix PD36 TAC at 5.5 inches with a pocket clip, or the smaller TK05R.

Do tactical flashlights have a strobe?

Every light on this page has an instant strobe from the tail switch or toggle.

The bottom line

For one light that does everything, the TK20R V2.0. For daily pocket carry, the PD36 TAC. For a shift on a belt, the TK21R or TK22R. For maximum power, the TK35R, and for seeing a mile, the TK30R. Whichever you pick, put it in a sheath so it is on you when you need it.
